Welcome

I have a spot on the web site to talk and say a few words about cub scouts.

Current Letter

10/30/2008 - Based on my last letter we had the Cubmaster role filled and I was looking towards my future in scouting by going onward to Boy Scouts where my oldest son currently is with Troop 111.  Well times change and a persons employment position changes which cause conflicts to not be able to perform a role to their best ability.  Well I am the temporary Cubmaster for Pack 268.  I'm very concerned that there isn't one person in this very large pack to take on the role of Cubmaster or even Committee Chair.  Yes our current Committee Chair has offered to do the Cubmaster role if someone will step up for the Committee Chair role.  This is where I need to plea with the families of Pack 268 to keep the pack going and remain fun for the scouts.  So as acting Cubmaster I am challenging someone in the pack to step up to the plate and help out in a leadership role for a couple of years.  It's not that difficult and if you get stuck ask for help I did otherwise I would not have survived all these years.  Please call either myself or our Committee Chair.

Thank you.

03/29/08 - Spring is coming but Winter is still holding a tight grip.  Our pack is changing and the you know have a new Cubmaster to look to for fun and entertainment.  I am stepping down to be the Assistant Cubmaster in my last year with the pack before my youngest son crosses over to Boy Scouts.  I'm still having fun and I'll be around watching to make sure you guys progress onward towards your Arrow of Light achievement.  My role in scouting is now ever changing and I've been asked to perform District level tasks to make sure the scouting program is not only successful for our pack, but for other packs around our area.  So lets continue to have fun and give Mr. Earles a big hello and welcome to the pack as our new leader.

11/12/2007 - Wow have I been busy over the last couple of weeks.  University of Scouting on October 27th, 2007 and it was fun.  Then in November already on the 5th was Troop 111's Court of Honor and we had about 7 of our Webelos II scouts attend.  Then on Tuesday the 6th was the packs Parent Power Meeting to go over items for the up coming pack meeting.  On Wednesday night I finally turned over the Treasurer stuff to Todd and I thank you for taking on this role Todd.  Thursday night I spent planning the Friday pack meeting and getting things in order and of course on Friday was our big Space Derby Event, which we have not had in 4 years.  It was fun, cause I was able to give out Bobcat badges to 16 newt scouts, great job you guys and also hats off to the leaders and parents for getting the knowledge into the scouts minds for what a Bobcat is all about.

Now I need to talk about the help our pack is going to need in the next couple of months.  Yes, 2 volunteer jobs NEED to be replaced.  The first one is our Committee Chair position which becomes Vacant in the first week of February after Blue and Gold as that persons scout is crossing over to Boy Scouts and this is a required position for the packs survival.  The next position that needs to be filled is the Cubmaster role.  Yes my job, I would like to step down and become Assistant Cubmaster in my last year of membership with Pack 268.  Since joining scouts as an adult I have never seen what it's like to just be a parent.  Now don't get me wrong I have enjoyed every moment as a leader and just seeing smiles on the scouts faces was all that I needed to continue on in my chosen positions, yes I volunteered without being asked to assume the roles.  So I would like to have a parent step up to take over my role so I to can enjoy my last year with the Cub Pack as a part-time leader.  Thank you and I'll see y'all on December 6th for our big Skateville Event.

9/18/2007 - Our Pack Kickoff event went well with the addition of 18 new scouts. 12 new tigers and 6 other scouts in older ranks, and we also picked up about 4 new leaders.  Our caldron did steam for a while before it turned into a large block of ice which took almost a day and a half to thaw out.  I'm looking forward to having a great scouting year and I am also sad in that I'm losing the Den which I started with as a Tiger Cub Leader.  Yes Den 7 scouts will be crossing over to boy scouts in February.  But all is not lost we are still going to have fun this year in that we are having a fall Pack overnight in October and again a Pack overnight in late May, early June next year.  Lastly I have a parent looking at possibly taking over as the Committee Chair or the Cubmaster position.  Yes the Cubmaster position is up for grabs as I will be leaving the pack in February 2009 and I need someone in this position before I leave.  I did this for our previous leaders and it helps to have them around before they are gone.  Yes come February 2009 I will have 2 Boy Scouts.  So my days are number, but I have and am still having fun watching the boys grow up in the scouting way.

Its now late March 2007 and I'm writing this letter to thank all of the parents for a great 2006-2007 year in scouting.  the new fiscal year of scouting starts on April 1st, 2007 and we start looking towards the future of the new season and the completion of the old with rank advancement in May of this year.  I want to first say thank you to all that stepped up to give the pack a helping hand in areas needed within the committee of our organization, so thank you.  Now its time for me to say that I need someone to shoot for a higher role in our pack.  We have 2 positions that will need to be filled, the first needs a replacement before February 2008 and the second position needs to be filled by August 2008.  These are the Committee Chair and the Cubmaster roles of Pack 268.  Currently Deb Moege is our committee chair and her son will be crossing over to boy scouts in February 2008, and I would like someone to shadow her during the 2007-2008 year to take over this role.  Also I would like to step down to the role of Assistant Cubmaster and let a new bright star take the top role in our organization to make life fun and exciting for the 50+ boys we currently have in our pack.  So please give some serious thought to these 2 roles.

Its July 24th and we just had our Swim Event together at the Apple Valley Redwood Pool.  What fun that was and a lot of scouts where there which I think is great to see.  Anyhow the summer is now half over and some of you have already gone to camp and there is August camp trips ahead of us then its on to the Fishing Derby, then school starts right around the corner.  So I hope you all are having fun this summer and learning new things at camp.  This year we're having a separate Join Scouting Night (JSN) and then our office Pack Kick-Off Meeting.  So I hope to see a bunch on new scouts on JSN and all you older scouts and the new ones from JSN on our September Kick-Off night.  Scouting continues to be a big part of my life and I continually enjoy seeing smiles and all the scouters faces.  The reason I do it is to make the boys smile and learn new things to better themselves as the progress towards their future in life.  So remember we're in this for the boys, that's the reason I do it and I hope that's the reason you parents do it too.

Hi to ALL scouts and parents.  The end of the school year is coming which means only one thing.  Rank Advancement time is coming up.  But the best thing of all is that camping is right around the corner.  I hope ever scout has made the effort to sign up for camp this summer, because you learn so much while having lots of fun.

Thank you for taking the time to read my Cubmaster Corner letter - signed Cubmaster Don

Well the question has been asked and I'm going to try and do my best to answer the question.  WHY DO WE HAVE FUND RAISERS. Well its pretty easy to see why from my position, because I see where all the money goes.  It pays for Derby cars, Regatta boats,  Snow Tubing for the scouts, and the Cub Scouts dinners at Blue and Gold banquet time.  Also the awards the boys receive throughout the year, and at rank advancement time the new Books, Neckerchiefs, and slides that all the boys get for their next rank they will work towards.  So the money goes back to the boys in a very visible way.  Yes we are a non-profit organization, but our charter organization does not fund us directly, they simply represent us and give us an identity and location to exist.

So the committee will be putting together a summary budget so you as parents can see what the average cost is per boy in Pack 268 per year.  Also we have good volunteers that acquire items from the local business as donations to keep our costs down as low as possible.  So closing please keep your eyes open for our Pack budget Summary over the next couple of months.

Thank you for your time - signed Cubmaster Don.

First of all for those new to Pack 268, I welcome you and I also challenge you to participate fully in the cub scout and overall scouting program.  Scouting has been a major part of my life and family for the last 35 years.  Yes, 35 years can you believe it.  I became an eagle scout back in 1979 along with my younger brother.  I always promised myself that if I had boys that I would become active in scouting again as once you become an eagle scout your always an eagle scout.  There is never "I was an eagle scout once."

I challenge the parents of Pack 268 to volunteer for some aspect of the Pack before I ask you directly.  My biggest challenge currently is I need a new Committee Chair or Co-Committee Chairs (Husband and Wife team would be great).  An advancement Coordinator for getting all the awards together and lastly a Treasurer to keep track of where the Cub Pack is financial to support all the fun stuff we do for the scouts.  These jobs are not hard to do and I won't say they are easy, but the fun part is you get to communicate with me.  So here are a few ways you can help me out.  Also I will be needing a Christmas Wreath Coordinator in the Fall of 2006 and a new Flower Sales team in 2007.  So please contact me and ask how you can help or tell me how you want to help out Cub Pack 268.

Thank you.
